"While seen around the countryside, especially in farm gardens, Amaryllis bulbs are not commonly seen for sale. This is because the bulbs become very large before they flower and smaller bulbs are formed. Dr Keith Hammett QSM, RNZIH has been collecting and breeding Amaryllis belladonna for 40 years. lemon Pearl is the result of decades of breeding for fine form and delicate colors.

Growing Amaryllis belladonna from seeds involves many years; It takes a minimum of five years from seed to flower: "Some Naked Ladies (plants) may produce their first flower by the fifth year whilst others may take ten years or longer," says Dr Hammett.

These are extremely tough plants that thrive on neglect. They do appreciate full sun, low fertility soil and good drainage. I can only think of a nuclear bomb as a way of killing the mature bulbs.

Dr Hammett explains:

"Amaryllis belladonna has the common name Naked Ladies because the flower emerges from the bulb from late summer. Bella donna means beautiful lady. The leaves emerge after the flowers have faded and grow throughout the winter. Although long considered to be a true species, it has been shown to be a naturally occurring hybrid.

The plants make a bold display and are often seen on farm driveways. Flower colour ranges from pure white to deep cerise. There is much variation in flower shape.
Plants perform best in full sunlight and are happy in well drained to dry soils.The plant comes from South Africa. Unlike spring flowering bulbs which are moved and planted when fully dormant, Amaryllis belladonna bulbs are best moved after flowering and just when the leaves emerge."
